Texans bring in former Cowboys coach Phillips to fix defense

Wade Phillips faces a challenge which fixing is the Houston Texans defense, but he it inspires.

"I am up about the business opportunity fired," Phillips told the Houston Chronicle. "I studied 15 Texan games volume." I like your talent. "I am excited to work with you."

As the Texans new defensive coordinator Wednesday was Phillips set to revive a unit which at the bottom of the NFL season was assigned.

The former coach of the Dallas Cowboys Gary Kubiak's staff comes two days after the Texans defensive coordinator Frank Bush, secondary coach of David Gibbs released, linebacker coach, Johnny Holland and linebacker assistant coach Robert Saleh.

Phillips has a 81-62 record as head coach with the Cowboys, Buffalo Bills Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints. He was also a defensive coordinator for the Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Broncos, invoices, Hawk and San Diego Chargers.

The Texans (6-10) lost eight of their last 10 games for the defence, as one of NFL's worst rank. Houston finished 30th in yards allowed (386.6 per game) and the last before the pass (267.5 yards per game).

Third defensive coordinator will Phillips Kubiak's term, which began in 2006 and was on fragile ground until owner Bob McNair this week said that sticking with his coach was.

Bush and his predecessor, Richard Smith, had no experience at the position, and McNair and Kubiak said both, you needed someone with a more proven track record of this time.

Kubiak said KRIV-TV in Houston that he "very excited" working with Phillips, whom he was known for more than 30 years. Overlapping the 63-year-old Phillips, a defensive coordinator for much of his career was the defense in Denver from 1989 to 1992, 35 years Kubiak's career of John Elway's backup for the Broncos.

"We had a list of candidates, we strung that, but we wanted to start with, the guy that we thought was most qualified and fit our situation", Kubiak said. "We started with Wade, and that's where it ended."

Phillips and Kubiak learned in the late 1970s, Kubiak was a ball young and Wade was an Assistant with the Houston Oilers who bum was trained by Wade's father. Older Phillips a week showed at Texans practice and chatted with McNair, sparking speculation that his son in line to join the team was journal.

"I don't think you could have picked a better man", said bum Phillips in a telephone interview Wednesday night. "And I don't think that Wade have picked up, to get a better job could." He goes to get to work with a guy, he knows and respects. Makes the difference in the world for me. "It's very much for the calf and much Houston."

Wade Phillips was dismissed by the Cowboys to a 1-7 start this season. But in his Jason seasons, Dallas defense gave up an average 329.9 yards per game to rank 10th in the NFL during his tenure.

From 2004 to 2006 Phillips served as defensive coordinator at San Diego and the Chargers any of those years was less than 20 points per game. The coach in Buffalo from 1998 to 2000 was Phillips and the NFL led invoices total enables defense 1999 only 266.2 yards and 14.3 points per game.

The Texans defense was bad from the start this season, gaining an average 410.5 yards through the first six games. Houston began only 4-2, because the offense topped 30 points in each of the victories.

Pro Bowl of middle linebacker DeMeco Ryan's ruptured his high heel in the sixth game, and the defence never improved.

The plan start rookie Kareem Jackson and second year per Glover Quin at the cornerback has not worked. Houston was a League-high-33 touchdown passes and the secondary long receptions late repeatedly defeated in games.

The pass rush was also a problem. Defensive end Mario Williams had 8.5 sacks the first 13 games, but then he went to season-ending injured reserve with a sports hernia. Houston had to this season 23rd rank total 30 bags.

Phillips preferred a 3-4 defensive alignment a change from the 4-3, would have played two seasons the Texans the last. Kubiak said Monday that he care didn't, what is its new Coordinator scheme, as long as it works.

"Wade feels confident about running a 3-4, and I'm thrilled that," Kubiak said the Chronicle. Wade said he feels good about the talent that we have and will use players such as he. He said Mario has to be one of the most successful players, and that it his Mario positioned them brought.

"Wade talked about some things he did, what will he with Mario and I like to do compared with Bruce Smith Buffalo what I hear."

A 3-4 scheme would require, defensive end Antonio Smith, Williams and fellow fit their techniques, and more on the inside of the line as external attack.

"It depends on the players we have and the location (in distance below)," the Chronicle said Phillips. "I'm really excited about working with Mario Williams and see how we all can use talent."

It's something Phillips will have to think this offseason. Some doubts voiced Smith.

"If it doesn't fit you, there you not fits," said Smith. "I think that sometimes players get a bad rap in the decision, you and the longevity of her career best matches, and you are half of the time saw and in a bad light, because you want to keep her career, who go on the same seat that went on there." And with a change of defence, which it is not suitable, you'll directly on the street your career ends, if you do not at this position.

"Well, if it fits, it fits," added Smith. "And if possible, I can do it." "But if it isn't, it is not easy."

Bum Phillips believes Wade Houston's staff is adjusted.

"He has trained every kind of defensive front you may have and played every kind of coverage you can play," said Phillips. You've ' got it fit the guys that have you. "Which system fits the best, that is, what I'm sure you will try to lead."
